Watch, Record, and Use

Heaven - Where is it? How do we get there? This might be an interesting program to watch, tape, and use in ministry. It’s a Barbara Walters special, and it airs tonight on ABC at 9 pm. I wonder how much she will talk about the Christian perspective on heaven. Either way, it might be worth watching and using to see what people think.

By the way, here’s what The Barna Group uncovered when they surveyed Americans about their beliefs in heaven and hell:

Heaven: There is a tendency to believe if a person is generally good, or does enough good things for others during their life, they will earn a place in Heaven. In 2005 the public decided on the matter: 54% agree, 39% disagree. This represents little change since 2002 when 55% agreed and 38% disagreed; 1996 when 54% agreed and 38% disagreed; or 1993, when 56% agreed with this notion.

Hell: Three in ten adults (31%) see hell as an actual location: “a place of physical torment where people may be sent.” (1996); Four in ten adults (37%), say “hell is not a place, but it represents a state of permanent separation from the presence of God.” (1996); Describing hell as merely a symbolic term, not referring to a physical place was true for two in ten Americans (19%). (1996)

What’s in Your Medicine Cabinet?

A new survey shows that teens are smoking less than before. We think that’s a good thing. The new thing, however, is that many are taking prescription drugs instead. Here are some of the findings:

  • 21.4% of all 8th graders have used some form of illicit drug in their life.
  • 50% of all 12th graders have used an illicit drug.
  • 9.5% of all 12th graders have used Vicodin in the past year, and 5.5% have used OxyContin within the past year.
  • 44.8 percent of 12th graders said they had used marijuana at some time in their lives.
  • 34.1 percent of 10th graders said they had used marijuana at some time in their lives.
  • 16.5 percent of eighth graders said they had used marijuana at some time in their lives.

Christmas. The whole idea of God becoming a man. God in the form of a baby. These are crazy thoughts. The video captures this idea on the subject.
