What do you do?

I want your feedback. I want this to be a community. What do you do to help form students spiritually? What has worked in the past for you? Leave a comment with suggestions for disicpleship. And ask your friends to post one, too. Let’s see if we can get some suggestions for the best things to do for discipleship. Let me know, please. Thanks.

The only thing that has really worked for me is disipling others. This isn’t Bible study or small groups but personal discipleship in the way Jesus invested in people. The change that happens in people when someone cares enough to invest in them is amazing. It can’t be formulaic and it can’t be mass produced.

What that looks like for me is meeting with people and asking about their life. It’s more than just questions though. I share my life too I guess. But, most important, we talk about what God is doing in our lives and challenge ourselves and each other to imagine what God is calling us to do. This a bit of a meander, but that is kind of what it usually looks like for me. Of the guys I have done this with, I still talk to them regularly, even though we aren’t in proximity and we still challenge each other often. Many of those guys are in ministry now too.

Maybe there’s another post on discipleship tools?

My thoughts are along the same lines as Conrad, but I would also emphasize that discipleship takes place best in the context of relationship but with intentional leadership development in mind. Jesus not only developed friendships with His disciples, He taught them to be leaders and continue spreading His message after He returned to heaven. If we don’t build relationships that encourage students to be leaders and give them opportunities to practice as such, then the benefit of their discipleship ends with them. We need to train leaders to continue spreading His message after we’re gone. Hopefully the discipleship process doesn’t end with us.
