Game Goo

gelliboy.jpgCheck out this GelliBaff stuff that turns water into a slimy substance. It looks like it would make for some pretty cool games. Too bad it’s only available in the UK. I’m sure there are alternatives in the good ol’ USA. Check out the link, though. It’s worth it just to hear the commercial.

Made to Serve

saychees2001_00003100.jpgI found this little video on the Internet Archive a while ago, and I thought it would be a great introduction for a talk on service. So, here’s a little study you can do using “Say Cheese.”

Introduction: Play the video for your students and then ask them what they observe in it. Their answers will vary, but there should be some discussion about eating so much that you cannot move. Ask them how this can relate to us in our spiritual lives.

Biblical text:
We are created to serve God - Ephesians 2:10 - We were created in Christ Jesus for good works.
We are saved to serve God - 2 Timothy 1:9

Often times, we take in so much at church that we become fat like the mouse in the video. We like to come to church service or youth group meetings to see what is happening, but we never get out and exercise our faith. We become so fat that we cannot move. Instead of doing this, we should be working out, serving God using our gifts, talents, and abilities. He created us to serve Him. That’s why we are still on the earth.

Application: What can you do this week to “work out” your faith? What kinds of abilities has God given you that you could use for His service?

It would be a good idea to offer a list of things that each student could do in order to help in the ministry.

I Want to Know

I want to know what you’re thinking (Sorry for the link). One of the first books on youth ministry I ever read (for a university class) was The Complete Book of Youth Ministry by Benson and Senter. It’s a good book. In it, they have some “Axioms of Youth Ministry.” I thought that we could go through these “axioms” and give our opinions about them. Each Thursday we’ll put up a new one. So…tell me…what do you think?

Axiom #1: Youth Ministry begins when a Christian adult finds a comfortable method of entering a student’s world.

Are you an evangelical?

Labels. We all live with them. We can be white, black, hispanic, democrat, republican, etc. The Barna Group recently released some new research about evangelicals. Here are their criteria for being a “nine-point” evangelical. I didn’t even know that label existed. How do you “rate”? Or maybe the better question is how do you rate their rating system?

An evangelical is a person who:

  • Has made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in their life today.
  • Indicated they believe that when they die they will go to Heaven because they had confessed their sins and had accepted Jesus Christ as their savior.
  • Says their faith is very important in their life today.
  • Believes they have a personal responsibility to share their religious beliefs about Christ with non-Christians.
  • Believes that Satan exists.
  • Believes that eternal salvation is possible only through grace, not works.
  • Believes that Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth.
  • Asserts that the Bible is accurate in all that it teaches.
  • Describes God as the all-knowing, all-powerful, perfect deity who created the universe and still rules it today.
  • The article also says, “Being classified as an evangelical is not dependent upon church attendance or the denominational affiliation of the church attended. Respondents were not asked to describe themselves as ‘evangelical’.”
